Nature’s Healer: The Incredible Story of Dr. James Still

Dr. James Still: The Beloved Herbalist and Physician of the Pine Barrens

This blog is one of many dedicated to Black History Month, honoring the legacy of Black pioneers who shaped history through resilience, innovation, and excellence.

In the heart of 19th-century America, deep in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, a brilliant healer emerged—Dr. James Still. Born in 1812 to formerly enslaved parents, Dr. Still didn’t just rise above adversity; he crushed every limitation placed before him. With little formal education, no wealth, and every odd stacked against him, he became one of the most revered herbalists and physicians of his time. His journey is one of determination, wisdom, and unwavering trust in the healing power of the earth.

Humble Beginnings, Unshakable Vision

James Still was born in Medford, New Jersey, in an era when opportunities for African Americans were almost nonexistent. Schooling was a luxury he barely had access to—only three months of formal education, and even then, only when the weather was too bad for farm work. But Still had something more powerful than privilege: curiosity and a calling. He got a hold of an herbal book first, which sparked his interest in natural medicine, and from there, he went on to learn botany. He taught himself to read, devouring any medical book he could find, and learned about plants and their medicinal properties, inspired by the remedies his mother used to heal their community.

The Making of “The Black Doctor of the Pines”

Still’s dream was always to be a doctor, but racism and poverty made medical school an impossible dream. Instead of accepting defeat, he turned to what he had—nature. He studied every root, leaf, and bark he could get his hands on, learning how the earth itself could provide medicine. He experimented, observed, and refined his craft until his remedies became known far and wide. He saved enough from odd jobs to buy land, setting up his practice despite having no formal degree. People—Black and white alike—flocked to him, recognizing his gift. His reputation spread, and he earned the name “The Black Doctor of the Pines.”

Healing with the Gifts of the Earth

Dr. Still worked with what nature provided, using powerful herbs like sassafras, wild cherry bark, goldenseal, elecampane, and horehound to treat everything from colds to chronic illnesses. At a time when traditional doctors relied on painful and often harmful treatments like bloodletting, Still’s gentle, holistic methods were revolutionary. He crafted tinctures, tonics, and herbal remedies, bringing healing to those who had no access to—or had lost faith in—traditional medicine.

His most famous remedy became so sought-after that it was sold across the region. While some in the medical community dismissed him because he lacked a degree, the people he healed knew better. His results spoke for themselves, and his work became legendary.

Still once said, “A great mind is planted within us in the beginning of our lives, and like other plants, it needs cultivation and watering from the best fountains.” His words remind us that knowledge and greatness are already within us—it’s up to us to nourish and grow them.

A Legacy That Lives On

Dr. James Still’s story is one of Black excellence, resilience, and an unshakable belief in his own purpose. He didn’t just succeed—he thrived, acquiring land, training others in the healing arts, and leaving behind a legacy that still inspires today. The Dr. James Still Historic Office Site and Education Center in Medford, NJ, stands as a testament to his brilliance and contributions to herbal medicine.

His story proves that perseverance and passion will always outshine oppression. He showed the world that healing isn’t just about degrees and titles—it’s about knowledge, skill, and heart.

Honoring Dr. Still’s Wisdom

I can’t help but feel deeply connected to Dr. Still’s journey. My dream was to become a traditional doctor, but life had other plans. Now, I help others heal with the plants the earth gives so generously. In today’s world, medical care is expensive, and so many are struggling to access what they need to heal. But just as Dr. Still did, I believe in the power of the earth to restore us. I will continue to alchemize herbs into teas and tinctures, bringing healing to those who need it most.

Like Dr. Still, the odds may be stacked against us, but that does not define our destiny. The world may not always see our greatness, but the people we touch, heal, and uplift will. His story is a reminder to keep pushing forward, to trust in the gifts within us, and to keep building, even when the world tries to deny us space.

Be encouraged, be inspired, and be relentless in your pursuit of your dreams. It is your divine right to do so.

Dr. Still once reflected, “I relied, however, on the great hand which made the sun, moon, and stars, and I believed that He could work when none could hinder.”

Let that faith and perseverance carry us forward.
